It is a fair question and a hard one to answer with a single figure, because the cost depends on what is actually wrong, the size and type of your tyres, and where you are when it happens. Rather than quote prices that would be out of date tomorrow, here is an honest guide to what drives the cost in France so you know what to expect.
Repair is far cheaper than replacement
The single biggest factor is whether your tyre can be repaired or has to be replaced. A repair β plugging or patching a small puncture in the tread β uses a little material and a bit of labour, so it is the most affordable outcome by a wide margin. A replacement means the price of new tyres on top of the fitting, which is naturally a bigger sum.
When a tyre can be repaired
- The puncture is in the tread, the central band that meets the road.
- The hole is small β typically from a nail or screw β and within the repairable area.
- The tyre has not been driven on while flat, which damages the internal structure.
When it must be replaced
- The damage is in the sidewall β a cut, a bulge or a kerbing scrape. Sidewalls cannot be repaired safely, full stop.
- The tyre ran flat and overheated.
- The tread is already near the legal limit, in which case a repair is poor value.
Why you may pay for two, not one
In France tyres are fitted in pairs across an axle β two, four or six, never a single tyre. This sometimes surprises visitors, but the reason is safety: two tyres on the same axle with different tread depths or models grip and behave differently, which upsets handling and braking. So if a replacement is needed, budget for a pair on that axle. It is a genuine safety practice, not a way to sell you more.
What else moves the price
- Tyre size and rating. A small city-car tyre costs far less than a large, high-performance or SUV tyre.
- Brand. Premium brands cost more than budget ranges, with mid-range options in between.
- Extras. A new valve, a TPMS sensor reset or replacement, and wheel balancing can add to the total, though balancing is usually included with new tyres.
- VAT. French prices include TVA; ask for an itemised invoice, which you will want for any insurance claim.
Does mobile fitting cost more?
A mobile service brings the workshop to you, which has obvious value when you are stranded, on a tight schedule or far from a garage. What you save is the hassle, the wait and sometimes a recovery charge you would otherwise face to reach a fixed garage. Because we repair and replace on the spot β and never tow β you avoid towing fees entirely. For many travellers, getting back on the road the same hour is worth a great deal.
How to keep the cost down
- Act quickly β driving on a slow puncture can turn a cheap repair into a forced replacement.
- Keep your pressures correct, especially when loaded for a holiday, to avoid heat damage.
- If you do need new tyres, fitting a quality pair now can save you buying again sooner.
